How To Clean Area Rugs Like a Pro

Cleaning Area Rugs Like a Pro

Area rugs can be a beautiful addition to any space in your home, adding a pop of color to liven up a room, or a comfortable place to lounge on the floor. The last thing you want, however, is a dingy rug dirtying up your space or making it smell bad.

When it’s time to wash the rug, you have two choices: do it yourself, or pay a professional to do it for you. Unless your rug is Persian, it’s a great idea to clean it yourself since the process is simple and inexpensive. Here are 5 simple steps to get your rug spotless in no time.

1. Remove Dust and Debris

The first step in properly cleaning your area rug is to vacuum it top and bottom to make sure any the dirt and debris present are removed.

2. Make Sure It’s Colorfast

Once vacuumed, consider taking your rug outside and placing it on a flat waterproof surface, like a patio, driveway, or another paved area in your yard. Prior to applying your cleaning mixture to the entire rug, test it out on one tiny spot to make sure your rug is colorfast.

3. Scrub-a-Dub-Dub

As long as your rug is colorfast, it’s safe to proceed with the scheduled cleaning. Using a soft brush or sponge, scrub the rug thoroughly until you’ve built up a lather. Let the solution sit for about 5 minutes.

4. Rinse it Off

Using a hose or other outdoor water source, rinse off the rug, then use a wet/dry vac to remove as much water as possible. Lay the rug flat to dry, flipping it over to dry the underside when the topside is finished.

5. Perk it Up

Run your vacuum over your rug one more time to perk up any fibers that may have been flattened down by the washing. Your rug is now clean and ready to return to your home.
